Sports Medicine

Sports are fun. Sports build confidence. Sports are good for mind and body. And sometimes sports hurt. That’s where we can help, by showing you how to prevent injuries and caring for you when they happen.

Our sports medicine team provides individualized, highly skilled care that addresses all major sports injuries including:

  • Ankle sprains and fractures
  • Knee injuries (including ACL reconstruction)
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Tendonitis
  • Hip bursitis, fractures and dislocations
  • Low back and neck pain
  • Concussions

Concussion management

Sports-related concussion injuries are both dangerous and complex, requiring highly skilled assessment, treatment and safe return to play guidelines.

At OSF Saint Luke, we provide prevention, education and management strategies for concussions. The scope of this program reaches beyond the field or court and into the classroom as well, so that students will be prepared to successfully return to school.

Our sports medicine staff work closely with athletes, coaches, teachers and families to maintain communication throughout the process and ensure that full recovery has been reached and the athlete can safely return to play.

Concussion testing

Essential to this program is concussion testing. This is widely used and scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation. Baseline concussion testing is available to student-athletes with immediate follow-up evaluation and treatment in the event of a concussion

Concussion education programs are also available for area coaches, school administrators, teachers, nurses and parents.  Educational programs are provided by athletic training, physical therapy and speech/language pathology staff upon request.
