The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Responder is to initiate immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response and to assist higher level personnel at the scene and during transport. Emergency Medical Responders function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Responders perform basic interventions with minimal equipment.

PAEMS offers their students a hybrid EMR course designed to fit into today’s busy life. There will be 56 hours of online lectures, videos, quizzes, and exams along with 24 hours of in class skills mastery.

Anyone interested in this level of practice must be at least 16 years of age, if they are between 16 and 18 years of age they would be a Provisional EMR and must respond with a licensed EMR until they turn 18 years of age. This is a great level for those interested yet apprehensive about becoming an EMT.

The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

The face of pre hospital emergency care, the EMT has the knowledge and skills to care for and transport the critically ill and injured.  The EMT has a vast array of medications they can administer and treatments that they can perform in an emergency situation that may save lives.  EMT’s may be a part of a volunteer and/or paid Ambulance and Fire Department.

PAEMS offers their students a hybrid EMT course designed to fit into today’s busy life.  There will be 120 hours of online lectures, videos, quizzes, and exams along with 80 hours of in class skills mastery. One night per week for 20 weeks.This class allows for far more hands on mastery of skills and performance of assessments.

Anyone interested in this level of practice must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and a clean felony record.

The Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Paramedics perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Paramedic is a link from the scene into the health care system.

PAEMS offers their students a hybrid Paramedic course designed to fit into today’s busy life.  Online lectures, videos, quizzes, and high stakes exams along with one day per week in class skills mastery.  The Paramedic student will attend Anatomy and Physiology, ACLS, PALS, and ITLS courses during their didactic portion of the course.  This course is in person on Fridays from 8am-4pm each week.

The Paramedic student has in hospital clinical rotations in the ED, OB, Surgery, and other areas designed to allow them to perform skills in a supervised setting on live patients.  Once the Paramedic student becomes competent in performing their skills they will master them on an ambulance treating real patients in an emergent situation under the watchful eye of one of our Field Training Instructors.  Once all aspects of the course are complete the student will meet with the Medical Director to be approved to sit for the NREMT examinations.

“The Peoria Area EMS/ OSF St. Francis Medical Paramedic Program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).  This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation.  Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT’s Paramedic credentialing examinations.  However, it is Not a guarantee of eventual accreditation.”

The PHRN adds a different aspect to non emergency transports and a new opportunity for RN's who want to provide care in the pre hospital environment.  They practice as a Paramedic in the pre hospital 911 world with the added benefit of a nurses skill set for non emergency transports.

The Pre-hospital Registered Nurse Program provides supplemental education to licensed RNs to practice within an EMS System as emergency medical services personnel for pre-hospital and inter-hospital emergency care and non-emergency transports per the guidelines outlined in Section 515.730 of the Illinois EMS Act

The PAEMS PHRN program is 3 months long and primarily online.  There are 5 or 6 in person skills mastery days where the RN will perfect their skills that may only be found in the pre hospital environment.  They will master intubations in the OR and must satisfactorily lead 20 ALS calls on a transporting ambulance in order to complete their educational requirements.  Once those requirements are completed they may then challenge the NREMT Paramedic exam.

These AHA courses are either a 1 day renewal or a 1 day initial provider course held here at our office.  These courses are taught in accordance with the AHA curriculum in both lecture and video formats with hands on skills stations.  The student may have a pre course test that must be completed and brought with them to class.  AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS are required for all ALS pre hospital providers in order to practice within the PAEMS system.  AHA BLS is required for all EMR and EMT level pre hospital providers within the PAEMS system. 

ITLS is taught as a 1 day renewal and 2 day initial provider course held here at our office.  This class is taught according to the curriculum set forth by the American College of Surgeons and is lecture, video, and hands on skills based.  The student will have a pre course test that they must complete and bring in the day of the class. ITLS is required for all ALS providers within the PAEMS system.
