Providing a backdrop for this experience is a highly automated pathology laboratory within a regional medical center, where a wide variety of specimens are processed daily with both routine and special stains.
The OSF Saint Francis Department of Pathology completes over 60,000 surgical tissue cases and 60 autopsies annually, comprising over 150,000 tissue blocks and 700,000 slides.
The laboratory employs a full-time staff of 20 histotechnicians and histotechnologists to maintain this workload. Eleven certified anatomical pathologists, with additional specialty certifications in dermatopathology, hematopathology and neuropathology are also on staff.
The large number of patient specimens – as well as hospital specialties in neonatology, cardiology, transplant surgery, obstetrics, hemodialysis, trauma, neurology, etc. – enable the OSF histology student to experience a wide variety of tissue samples and procedures.
